Neighborhood Outreach
The Three Churches:
The Three Churches is an ecumenical partnership among Christ the King, Trinity Presbyterian and Episcopal Church of the Cross in which the three neighborhood congregations share in ministry on many levels:
Worship and Christian Formation – the Three Churches worship together regularly for our Thanksgiving, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and midweek Advent services. In addition we gather on an occasional basis for special celebrations such as Pentecost Sunday and the outdoor Weston Lake Service others as they arise. Three Churches also have a tradition of midweek Advent studies and prayer services.
Outreach - The Three Churches have historically collaborated on neighborhood children’s outreach such as afterschool programs (Monday School and Tuesday School), End of Year Celebration, Back to School Bash, Trunk or Treat and VBS. We participate together in Family Promise for homeless families hosted at Trinity Presbyterian. Most recently, together we have implemented the In the Neighborhood for Good outreach initiative.
In the Neighborhood for Good:
In the Neighborhood for Good is a neighborhood outreach program of The Three Churches, Christ Mission Lutheran Church, and Annie Burnside Elementary. The Neighborhood intitiative is funded by grants from the Growing in God’s Mission Fund and the Inclusiveness Network of the South Carolina Synod of the ELCA.
2019 -2020 projects included:
* A Neighborhood Prayer Picnic last November at Christ the King.
* Several monthly Student Behavior Celebrations events with the children at Burnside.
* Two luncheons for Burnside Teachers before 2019 Christmas break and in the fall of 2020.
* Our proposed Spring Prayer Picnic had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 so our volunteers served 100 pizzas, bags of cookies and surgical facemasks to the neighbors in the two low-income housing developments adjacent to CTK over two weekends during the summer.
* $10 grocer gift coupons for every family in the two low-income developments in the neighborhood.
Plans for the 2021 grant year include the formation of “learning pods” for the neighborhood children led by the staff of Annie Burnside Elementary.
